This
is the most advanced structural management program
available today for athletes. Coaches and athletes will recognize
the benefit from incorporating any or all of the following programs
into training regimes.
The 3 programs that make
up The Structural Management Program and provide maximum injury
prevention, structural correction of injuries and advanced conditioning
potential are the:
|
---Structural
Fingerprint Exam—this
exam looks at the athlete as an architectural structure. Over 98%
of all low
back injuries are mechanical in nature, not pathological, and a
structural exam is critical for maximal structural potential. On
each and every athlete, a “snapshot” of information
is collected, providing quantifiable information, which is a result
of heredity, prior injuries, imbalanced muscle activity, arch weaknesses
in the feet, bad habits, height, weight, sport, position, diet,
shoe quality and many other factors. The exam consists of;
o Visual postural exam
o Range of motion of all joints looking for pain and/or restriction
o Muscle tests looking for trigger point activity, pain and restrictions
o Measurement of leg lengths from greater trochanter to lateral
malleoli
o Complete foot evaluation for flaring, pronation or supination
o Q angles of knees
o Structural x-rays in standing position looking at pelvic height,
sacral base angle, Ferguson’s gravity line in the low back
and the gravity line in the cervical spine as seen on the lateral
cervical, relationship between the atlas and axis as seen on the
open mouth view, lordotic curves, balance, alignment and disc integrity
after ruling out pathology
Once
all of this information is collected and interpreted, an individualized
corrective program will be designed, with relevant information provided
to the strength and conditioning coach for maximum conditioning
and injury prevention for each athlete.
The
objective is to develop a data-base of weaknesses and structural
imbalances of each athlete that will become both the starting point
for the athlete’s treatment/conditioning program as well as
reference data for future purposes. Once this information is interpreted,
the athlete will begin their conditioning program.

| ---Advanced
Conditioning Program—The
first phase of this program will last 6 months. An intensive program
designed to correct structural imbalances will consist of some or
all of the following;
o
Chiropractic adjustments
---3x’s/wk-6wks., 2x’s/wk-6wks, 1x/wk-14 weeks
o Custom-fitted orthotics
o Appropriate physical therapy
o Core, stability and flexibility exercise program
o Weight training/circuit training program
o Weight management
o Habit modification
o The Maggs Muscle Management? Program
At the end of 6 months, a complete re-evaluation, including re-x-rays,
is performed. The goals of this 6-month program are as follows;
o
re-education of the muscles and joints of the body
o improved structural balance
--- muscle balance
--- joint strength and balance
o increased injury prevention
o structural improvements seen on re-x-rays
